The Fighting Tongs

I had the pleasure of watching Big Trouble in Little China on DVD yesterday. J bought that for me last weekend, and I finally got the time to sit down and watch the whole thing. Not many people are aware of the cinematic masterpiece that is John Carpenter's tale of Chinese black magic in 1986 San Francisco Chinatown, but, let me tell you, it's hilarious. Kurt Russell cracks me up in that movie. Funny thing though--I'd taped it off tv decades ago and so I got used to watching it with pauses for commercials and all the curse words bleeped out. So it was funny to see the actual movie yesterday. I was like "Hey, he just said 'horse(%#@'!" It was almost like watching a totally different movie. Same thing happened when I finally heard the original "Holla Back Girl" by Gwen Stefani. I had only heard it on the radio so when I heard the real thing, I was shocked. Does she kiss her baby with that mouth?

When some wild-eyed, eight-foot-tall maniac grabs your neck, taps the back of your favorite head up against the barroom wall, looks you crooked in the eye and asks you if ya paid your dues, you just stare that big sucker right back in the eye, and you remember what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like that: "Have ya paid your dues, Jack?" "Yessir, the check is in the mail."

I use to watch this with my brother all the time!

That movie was ABSOLUTELY one of my favorites growing up. I watched it all the time. The special effects are terrible but Kurt Russell is so great in it.

It's so awesome that they made him kind of a bumbling, cocky hero. I love the part when Wang is fighting all the guys, Jack's gun jams and he loses his knife, then he jumps back in the frame yelling "hyah!" and the fight's already over. Heh.

And now I'm going to have to watch that movie this week. YAY!!!

Another guilty pleasure from that year is The Golden Child but mostly for the part where Eddie uses the prayer wheel to rap "I want the knife".

I saw the Golden Child a few months ago. The special effects really are bad in that one. That snake lady at the end looks like something out of Clash of the Titans.

Clash of the Titans! Another gem in the realm of guilty pleasures. Willow and Dune would be on my list too. 80s movies are AWESOME.

Legend and Willow are definitely classic 80's. I've never seen Dune though. It has Sting in it, right? I'm amazed I never saw that considering I used to want to marry him. Huh.

Legend!!! Yes, definitely. What was the one with Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie? I'll check imdb.com. Labyrinth! Ann, if we were still in college, we'd be having an 80s sci-fi-a-thon this weekend and you'd see Dune. Oooh! And I'd throw in Tron for the coup-de-grace.

I LOVED Labrynth! And even though it has muppets, can I throw in the Dark Crystal?

I'm a big fan of both Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. I still call people "Gelflings" to this day.

The Neverending Story. 'Nuff said.

The Dark Crystal is a great one. Ann, you could totally pull off the Kira look if you get some fake ears.

I'd need wings, too. Do you remember that line "I always wondered what the difference was between boys and girls."

Great...now I am going to be singing "Neverending story" for the rest of the day! My sister LOVED that movie and could probably recite every word to this day. Ahhh...memories.
