It's like a party in my mouth
You know, I spend a little time every day looking at Myspace to see what the kids are up to these days, and I've come to a conclusion: nobody cares about spelling anymore. Have you seen what they type? It's all "ur so hott" and "im hom what u be out?" What? What does that mean?? And, honestly, I'm no paragon of grammar, but I'm getting a little concerned that when these kids are entering the workforce, monkeys will be taking the proofreading jobs from them. Pitiful. And then I'm walking into work today and I saw a sign on some gallery furniture that identified them as "pedistals." Sigh. This from someone who's actually in college.
In good news, however, Jones Soda is now making carbonated candy! It is delicious! And when you bite into it, it fizzes up. I love this stuff. I am adding Jones Soda Candy to my list of lovable candy inspired by pop, along with Bottle Caps and gummi colas. Mmm.

The Jones candy can be found at your local Target in little rectangular cans by the cash registers. I highly recommend.
Part of me hopes that these kids spell better in school and they're just abbreviating on Myspace to save time, but somehow I think that's probably too optimistic.
I can tell you from experience that the spelling is NO better in class, on tests, in emails from my college students who are GRADUATING in May! It is really sad and because poor spelling is my pet peeve, I spend as much time commenting on their answers as I do correcting spelling.
That is just pathetic. Graduating college seniors don't know how to spell?? Is this not emphasized in high school anymore? I'm wondering if most of their reading comes from the internet, because, if that's the case, that's not good. Any moron can post stuff on the internet (myself included).
Such is life in the age of Spell Check. Hubby got an e-mail from one of his students yesterday about changing her schedule, and it was rediculous! The worst part was that HE didn't pick up on the mistakes until I pointed them out...glad to see that Master's put to good use...geesh!
I just had a teacher come in here and tell me that computers are going to be the downfall of society. When it comes to spelling, she might be right. I still maintain that reading books is a good way to learn spelling. Just seeing words spelled correctly helps you realize later when you've made a mistake.
I understand the spellcheck thing, but don't these kids have spelling and vocab tests anymore?
I don't read nearly as much as I should anymore, but when I was younger, I LOVED reading- I had TV and a Commodore 64, but I still did a lot of reading.
How do I prevent the Peanut from growing up like these MySpace kids??
You take the peanut to the library on Saturdays and tell them that if they read 25 books this week, you'll take them out for ice cream. Bribery: every parent's best friend :)
Katie~I read to Kassidy (2.5 years old) at naptime and bedtime. This girl LOVES her T.V., but we spend quite a bit of 1-on-1 time with books. Liam (10 months) loves books, and I am amazed at what he will sit still for. I have just started working a book into his bedtime routine We also spend time playing games on kid sites (noggin.com, nickjr.com, etc.) because it's foolish to think if a kid doesn't have access to a PC then they aren't going to know what one is.
Also, I read a study in college about mothers who read to their babies in utero, they read Cat in the Hat. Anyway, they tested the babies after they were born. The group that had been read to had an increased heart rate when they heard the words of Cat in the Hat then the babies that hadn't. There is even a book now to read to babies in utero: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0679885722/sheknowscom03-20
So, it's never to early to start...babies start to hear around 26 weeks.
Bottom line: Be involved, read to your baby as much as they will tolerate, but also don't underestimate the power of Baby Einstein Videos and Dora. Kassidy can sing her ABC's, knows all colors (including magenta and turquoise), and counts in Spanish. And, don't ever forget, You are the best Mother for that Baby...that's why it's YOUR baby!!!
Sorry for the rant!! =c)
We read every night to Emma Helen, too, she absolutely loves it! We do try to limit her TV but also don't want to make it the forbidden fruit and i agree about don't underestimate Dora, etc...EH can count to 10 in Spanish and I did not teach her that! :)
Hi Wubbiss,
